Won, Kyung Sun is the founder of Pulmuone Cooperative farm. Born into an indigent farm family in the southern part of Pyong Yang province in 1914, Won Kyung Sun began raising silkworms at the age of sixteen to support his family after the death of his debt-ridden father. The Korean War had a grave impact on him when his eldest son died at age six. In 1955, Mr. Won organized Pulmuone on 8 acres of unusable land to provide a "rebirth" for those who had been struggling with Christian values. The land was formed into a cooperative farming community. In 1976, Pulmuone adopted an organic farming approach by using organic fertilizers. In the late 1970s, Mr. Won solidified his Pulmuone values to be these: Love for our neighbors, because when our neighbors are not happy, we can never be happy; and Respect for all living beings, because everything is interdependent with each other. When we do not protect nature, which in turn supports all living beings, Mr. Won believed, the well being of our future is jeopardized. The top leaders in Korea regard Mr. Won as one of the most profound teachers in 20th-century Korea.
